Birds still on the move & Bat Week approaches

Bird migration is still in motion, with millions of birds flying overhead in the dark of night to get to their wintering grounds. To help our feathered friends safely migrate, continue to keep your exterior lights turned off or down through October, particularly between 11pm and 6am.

Looking for guidance on how to make your lights more bird-friendly? Visit our resource page here!

Turning out lights not only helps birds migrate more safely, but also helps Wisconsin’s wonderful bat species to hunt, roost, and migrate! Bat Week 2026 is an international celebration of the world’s only winged, fully-flighted mammal. Events are being held across the state offering opportunities to observe and learn about bats and celebrate their important role in our ecosystems.

Join Lights Out Wisconsin in Madison on Sunday, October 25, 2:00-4:00 PM for a free film screening of The Invisible Mammal — popcorn, socializing, and networking with related organizations is provided!

Looking for more local events to participate in? Visit Bat Week’s website and search for Wisconsin to find an event near you, or participate in an online event from anywhere!
