Lights Out Alert issued for the night of Thursday, October 1

Extremely high bird migration is forecasted over Wisconsin tomorrow night, October 1, as 23 million birds are forecasted to fly over the state.

Most birds migrate at night, and artificial light can disorient them and draw them toward buildings, increasing their risk of window collisions. Turning off unnecessary outdoor lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. can help reduce artificial light during migration and give birds a safer path through our communities.

We can make a bigger difference when we do it together. Talk to your neighbors, friends, local business owners, and community leaders about turning out unnecessary lights tonight. Even if we can't control every light in our community, we can help more people understand why Lights Out matters and encourage others to take part. Find resources to help you advocate on the Lights Out Wisconsin website.

Businesses, schools, municipalities, community organizations, and individual households can all play a role. The more of us who turn out unnecessary lights, the more we can reduce artificial light across our communities during migration.

Tonight, let's turn out what we can and encourage the people around us to do the same. Together, we can make Wisconsin safer for birds on the move.

Thank you for caring for birds along their migration!
